The Sacred Medicine of Hapé

An Amazonian Tradition

Hapé (pronounced "hah-peh"), also known as Rapé, is far more than a powdered snuff. It is an ancient sacrament, a spirit ally, and a medicine of purification and alignment. Used for millennia by the indigenous tribes of the Amazon basin, including the Yawanawá, Huni Kuin (Kaxinawá), Katukina, and Nukini, Hapé carries prayers, intentions, and deep healing properties.

More than a physical medicine, Hapé is considered a living spirit, connecting users to the ancestral realms, opening the third eye, and purging stagnant energies from the body and soul. Among indigenous peoples, it is regarded as a sacred gift bestowed by the spirits of the forest.

The Sacred Blend

Traditional Hapé is created from a blend of sacred Mapacho tobacco (Nicotiana rustica), tree ashes, and medicinal plants. Each tribe has its own unique recipes, passed down through generations. The tobacco is fermented, sun-dried, and then pounded into an extremely fine powder along with ashes from sacred trees like Tsunu, Murici, or Pau Pereira.

The preparation itself is a sacred act. Shamans and medicine keepers infuse the blend with prayers, songs, and spiritual intentions. The plants and ash used vary from tribe to tribe, each carrying its own unique energetic properties.

The Kuripe: Self-Application

The Kuripe is a V-shaped pipe traditionally carved from a single piece of wood, bone, or bamboo, designed for self-administering Hapé. One end is placed in the mouth, the other in the nostril, and the medicine is gently blown into the nasal passages. This allows for personal, solitary practice and communion with the medicine.

The Sacred Ingredients

Traditional Hapé is crafted from a sacred blend of sun-cured jungle tobacco (Nicotiana rustica), alkaline tree ash, and cumaru seeds. Each ingredient carries its own medicine: the tobacco for grounding and clarity, the ash for purification and transformation, and the cumaru for its heart-opening aromatic properties.

The preparation process is itself a ceremony. The tobacco leaves are carefully fermented and dried under the jungle sun. Sacred trees are burned to create the alkaline ash. The ingredients are then ground together with prayers and intentions until the powder becomes as fine as talc, ready to carry its healing vibrations into the body and spirit.
